In this case study the site is Strömsbergs bruk, an area polluted by its former use as an ironworks. The contamination consists of arsenic, cadmium, lead, zinc and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Different scenarios are analyzed to see how changes in conditions will effect the spread of pollutants. To do this 5 different parameters are analyzed:
-
Infiltration
-
Groundwater flow
-
Grain size
-
Leaching of As
-
Water pH
System analysis is done to see the effect and cause of different parameters, in relation to each other.
-
0 – No interaction
-
1 – Weak interaction
-
2 – Medium interaction
-
3 - Strong interaction
The system analysis show which parameters are causing and/or effected.
The two different scenarios tested are:
Scenario 1
pH: low (pH 7,2)
Leaching of As: low (0,01 % leaching)
Infiltration: high (much precipitation)
Scenario 2
pH: high (pH 8,5)
Leaching of As: much (1 % leaching)
Infiltration: high (little precipitation)
In the pollutant-spread potential diagram shows that scenario 2 spread the pollution more than in scenario 1.
